Hawks Nest Wines of NZ

Hawks Nest Wines of NZ

Hello again from Dr. Jim. I have been too busy with my Nashville “day job” this month to post much on our Hawks Nest blog. Sorry about that but we are going back to NZ on Sept 9th for the NZ spring and I have had to work at my "day job" here catching up on my patient’s visits and surgery before we go back to lovely Matakana.

All is well with the sales of our 04 US release in Tennessee of Hawks Nest Orchard Block Red. We are excited to now have our first wine store in Franklin, Tennessee agree to carry our wine. There are a LOT of wine drinkers in the Franklin area now and we are honored that Colin Ward has agreed to give our wine a try at Del Rio Wine and Spirits located just north of downtown Franklin on Hillsboro Rd. and Del Rio. His wife, Beth, also runs a Wine and Spirits store a bit further north on the same road north to Nashville south of Franklin High so we are pleased that you have two places to buy Hawks Nest Orchard Block Red in Franklin now. Colin used to work for Lipman Brothers before he and his wife developed their two Franklin stores so he really knows his wines of course. He is a dog lover as well so he let me bring Smudge, our doggie, with me when I dropped in to share our wine and meet him the first time. That is Colin with Smudge in the photo outside Del Rio Wine and Spirits. That was a first for Smudge to make a call for Hawks Nest and she behaved well!!!!

We hope to organize a wine tasting or wine dinner with Colin and Beth soon after Thanksgiving in Franklin to introduce and pour our upcoming 05 release of Hawks Nest Orchard Block Red. We will post more on that yearend event as we have details. (if you like our 04 you are gonna LOVE our 05!!!!!

More soon from NashVegas or again from the God Zone after Labor Day.

Hawks Nest Wines of NZ

Hawks Nest Wines of NZ

Well, we had a super trip down to Chattanooga, Tenn. about 130 miles south of Nashville where my cousin, Mufti, hosted a wine tasting for us in her home this week. Mufti and her husband, John, are sooooo nice and Sandra and I had a wonderful time. She said she expected just a few of her "best friends who like wine" would come since a lot were out of town. Man, was I surprised that over 100 of the nicest people came by. We poured a lot of Hawks Nest Red wine and they all seemed to enjoy it a lot. We met a lot of nice people and many had been to NZ and those who had not either plan to soon or want to come down some time.

Sandra and I stayed overnight and then went to visit the best wine shop in the area the next morning with Mufti who is a good customer there. Riverside Wine and Spirits just by the Tennessee river near downtown Chatt. is a super store owed by Chris Bratcher. We got to visit with Chris and talked a bit about NZ. He hopes to come down to the GodZone one day and we do hope he does as he was a very nice guy. If he comes, we will try to get him to come see the Matakana Valley. Hopefully we will soon have our wine for sale in his store as a lot of Mufti's friends who tasted our wine shop there and are going to go in and ask for our wine. (we hope!!)

Here are a few shots of Mufti by or wine banner and after the event!!! Thanks for the nice event and for hosting us--we will be back when you ask us again!!!!

More soon.

Hawks Nest Wines of NZ

Hawks Nest Wines of NZ

Hello again from Dr Jim. We have just learned that we are invited to be part of a New Zealand themed eve of wine tasting sponsored by MidTown Wine and Spirits which is located between the medical center of Nashville and downtown on Church St. The owner, Paul, offers a wide selection of fine wines and I know many of my medical friends stop off there often on the way home. Here is the invite we have just put together for this tasting to be on Tues. Aug. 29th. If you live in Nashville, try to join us!!!!

More soon;

Dr Jim

Dear Tennessee Wine lover:
IT’S STILL HOT SUMMER TIME HERE!!!
BUT IN NEW ZEALAND IT IS COOL LATE WINTER!!!!

Tired of the same ole wine tasting events around Nashville these days? If so, we would like to invite you to join us for a special end of summer wine tasting of New Zealand wines organized by Paul and Matthew at Midtown Wines on Church Street. They will be offering some good NZ wines from their stock that are perfect for muggy summer drinking. In addition I will be pouring some of our NZ red from our first Hawks Nest Vineyard vintage- Orchard Block Red.
Our wine is light enough to go down well even on a hot summer Nashville eve. Do put Thursday August the 29th at 6 PM on your social calendar now and plan to join us then for a real Kiwi summer party at Mambu’s at 1806 Hayes St. in Midtown.
Call Mambu now at 329-1293 for reservations as seating is limited and Midtown always sells their events out quickly.
I plan to give a little travel and wine talk about NZ and do hope you will come. We will have a nice lazy way to spend a warm summer early evening so plan to join us. Please pass this on to your wine loving friends. Even better, why not invite them to come with you to learn a little about NZ and especially to get a taste of the GodZone.

Hope to see you on the 29th at Mambu’s - and remember, you can now get Hawks Nest Orchard Block Red at Midtown Wine and Spirits Superstore on Church in good ole midtown on Church. They have it placed close to the check out counter so you can just pop in a get some with ease.

Hawks Nest Vineyards

Hawks Nest gets its name from the native birds that soar over the hills of the scenic New Zealand coastal area where the vineyard is situated. Hawks Nest is nestled on gently sloping north facing soil in a working orchard block in the midst of picturesque Matakana Valley. At 37 degrees south latitude, Matakana Valley has a climate and soil not dissimilar to some of the great wine growing regions of the world. Less than an hour's drive north of Auckland, the Matakana region is blessed with pristine beaches, grass covered hillsides, and small pastoral communities for which New Zealand is renowned. The small hamlet of Matakana is the first town in the Southern Hemisphere to be officially designated a "Slow Town" and is fast becoming a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.

Hawks Nest has evolved since the late 1980's into an outstanding fruit orchard specializing in Asian Persimmons. Dr. Jim Daniell semi-retired from medicine and moved with his wife to New Zealand part time in 1999 to seek a life 'no less sophisticated but far less complicated.' Be it luck or fate, the Daniells settled on the scenic East Coast of the North Island near Matakana and purchased the orchard property. The orchard block vineyard was developed with plantings in 2002 of Malbec and Cabernet Franc grapes at the edges of the orchard in fertile clay soil that is similar to that in the best regions of Bordeaux. In addition to the grapes now grown on the orchard itself, Hawks Nest has been able to purchase mature quality Merlot grapes from the world famous Hawks Bay grape growing area of New Zealand.

Our winemaker and Premium Bordeaux style Reds

At Hawks Nest, we are passionate about achieving the highest quality wine with no compromises. To that end, Hawks Nest has partnered with John Worth, one of New Zealand's skilled young winemakers with extensive experience in winemaking in France. John received the University of Adelaide Graduate Diploma in Oenology in 1998. Following his stint at University, he worked in harvests in both Australia and France. His four years of French wine making experience includes past harvests at Chateau Giscours in Margaux; F. E. Trimbach, Ribeauville in Alsace; Hugel et fils, Riquewihr in Alsace; Chateau Du Tertre in Margaux, and at Chateau Haut Bailly in Pessac Leognan. Having worked with some of the worlds finest winemakers, John returned to New Zealand in 2004 to pursue his passion to produce premium quality Bordeaux style reds. John approached the Daniells because he felt the Hawks Nest site and vine plantings could allow him to accomplish his goal of making wines of the highest possible quality.

Our first vintage- Orchard Block Red

We are proud to now offer to Tennesseans our first vintage called Orchard Block Red. This fine wine has been crafted from Merlot and Malbec grapes from Hawkes Bay and Matakana, on the sun drenched East Coast of the North Island. Our goal is to produce savory elegant wines that represent the very best of New Zealand red wine. This, our first vintage, displays ripe rich fruit characters, is strongly structured, and has a long soft tannin finish. The wine was matured for 14 months in small oak barrels. This wine is an ideal partner to red meats and game, it will reward cellaring for up to 3-5 years.

Hawks Nest Wines of NZ: Hawks Nest Wines of NZ: Hawks Nest Wines of NZ

Hawks Nest Wines of NZ: Hawks Nest Wines of NZ: Hawks Nest Wines of NZ Well, all is going very good in Nashville with the sale of Hawks Nest Orchard Block Red Wine. It looks like we will be out of stock for our 04 first vintage before the new 05 bottles arrive around Thanksgiving. I have another wine tasting this next week in a new area of the region-the Franklin area. That should expose a whole new group of people to some good NZ red blend. I keep getting really good feedback on how well our wine seems to taste even in this hot humid summer weather here now. Lucky for us or medium tannin red blend goes down well in hot weather—who would have ever thought that would be the case???

Here is a shot of Steve Yocum outside Nashville Wine and Spirits liquor store which is one of the biggest seller of fine wines in this entire area. They have been selling a lot of our wine this last month as many of our wine imbibing friends shop here regularly. Today when I popped in and talked Steve into coming out front of the store in 100 degree heat for a photo for this blog, I noted that they only had two bottles left in the shop!!!! Nothing makes me happier than seeing empty bottle space on the shelves where our wine usually sits. To quote you know who that really “makes my day”.

I talked to Jeremy, our vineyard manager, on the phone back in NZ and he tells me that our winter pruning is almost finished. Now we just wait for springtime in Matakana so those suckers can start sprouting again. He also said that our 05 barrel and even the very young 06 barrel samples are now tasting pretty good. (I hope he does not drink the darn barrels dry with all that frequent tasting before we get back) We are all approved for our US export label for our 05 release so now we can print our new labels and prepare for bottling and labeling in mid Sept. Sandra and I have not yet seen our wine being bottled, so that will be a treat for us when we get home to NZ on Sept the 11th. (hummmmmmm, should I maybe travel another day??? No way as I am not going to let terrorists scare me!!)
Anyway, my next blog will be about our upcoming wine even at my favorite cousin’s house down on Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. That will be a blast as Mufti (that’s my cousin!!!) is a lot of fun and can really throw a good party!!! So, look out for a report on that event next week if we survive her hospitality and don't fall off the cliff that is her back yard.

More Soon and happy sipping

Dr Jim –longing to get back downunder
